With the on growing popularity of Open Source
Software, Linux is a viable alternative to

Microsoft Windows.
As an open Source Operating system the cost is free
and updates are free.
But really how can
a business run on free software?
Many types of applications available for
Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X are also available
for Linux. Commonly, either a free software
application will exist which does the functions of
an application found on another operating systems,
or that application will have a version that works
on Linux.
The Wine project provides a Windows compatibility
layer to run unmodified Windows applications on
Linux. In other cases, where there is no Linux port
of some software in areas such as desktop publishing
and
professional audio there is equivalent software
available on Linux.
As open source software keeps gaining
popularity we keep seeing more software applications
supporting the Linux OS.
Not all business can and should rely on Linux.
Again it depends on your business and the
tools you need.
If
your business is mostly internet based then chances
are Linux would be a good fit.
There is a
lot of productivity software for Linux most of which
is Open Source.
Open
Office is a prime example.
Open Office
offers the same basic tools as Microsoft Office, but
for free, a Word Processor, Spreadsheet,
Presentation, Database, and Graphics package.
Plus the
files are compatible with Microsoft Office.
